Employee Assistance Program - EAP | Workplace Counselling and Workplace support
Employee Assistance Program services for Tasmanian businesses. Confidential workplace counselling and stress management support for employees as well as comprehensive assessments for staff who are struggling.
Hobart Therapy offers two distinct professional services beyond individual therapy: Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselling for Tasmanian workplaces, and specialist support for complex or high-needs clients referred by managers or other practitioners or services. Both are underpinned by long years of clinical experience and a direct, practically focused approach.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
We provide confidential EAP counselling for Tasmanian businesses of any size. Employees access short-term professional support for personal or work-related concerns — entirely separate from management, and at no cost to them.
Confidentiality
What employees discuss stays private. Employers receive only de-identified utilisation data — never individual session information. The only exceptions are those required by law, such as imminent risk of serious harm.
What EAP covers
Work Issues
- Stress, burnout, and workload
- Conflict with colleagues or managers
- Organisational change and uncertainty
- Performance concerns and role pressure
- Workplace trauma and critical incidents
- Vicarious trauma for helping professionals
Personal Issues
- Anxiety and depression and any other mental health issues
- Relationship and family difficulties
- Separation, grief, and loss
- Life transitions and major change
- Substance use concerns
- Work-life balance and parenting pressure
How it works
- Employee self-refers directly — no employer involvement required
- Typically 3–6 sessions per issue, sufficient for most short-term concerns
- Available face-to-face at our Hobart office, online, or by phone
- Longer-term needs are referred on appropriately with employee consent
- Employers receive de-identified utilisation reports on request
Setting up EAP for your organisation
Get in touch to discuss your organisation's needs — size, workforce profile, session allocation, and budget. We'll tailor an arrangement that works and provide the materials you need to communicate it to your team. Contact us at 0449 734 441 or via our contact page.
Complex and High-Needs Client Referrals
We accept referrals from practitioners, GPs, services, and organisations for clients who are complex, high-needs, or have been difficult to engage elsewhere. This is a service that supports you and your staff who may be struggling in the workplace, to maintain work relationships, where there is a drop in performance etc.
Who we work well with
- Staff expressing strong emotions in the workplace or finding difficulty maintaining reasonable workplace relationship
- Complex and developmental trauma — cPTSD, early relational trauma and dissociation that may have emerged in the workplace
- Staff struggling with communication who may use anger — or anger as failed communication.
- Hard-to-engage workers — ambivalent, sceptical, or those who've had poor experiences with work or managers
- Co-occurring presentations — depression and substance use, trauma and BPD, anxiety and chronic anger
- Clients requiring referral from EAP — employees who need more than short-term support can transition into ongoing individual therapy
What we bring to complex work
Many years of clinical experience across DBT, EMDR, EFT, and attachment-oriented approaches. We don't have a single formula. Complex presentations get a genuinely tailored response — and an honest conversation about what's likely to help and what isn't.
Making a referral
Referrals can be made by phone or email. We're happy to have a brief conversation about the client's presentation before any appointment is booked — that conversation often helps us work out whether we're the right fit and what the initial approach should look like.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my employer know I've used EAP?
No. EAP is entirely confidential. Your employer will never know you've accessed support unless you choose to tell them - they will get information required for billing purposes.
What does EAP cost employees?
Nothing. EAP is a benefit paid for by your employer. There are no out-of-pocket costs for allocated sessions.
Can I use EAP for personal problems, not just work issues?
Yes. Personal wellbeing affects work performance, so relationship difficulties, mental health concerns, and life challenges are all appropriate for EAP support.
What if I need more sessions than EAP provides?
We'll talk through the options — continuing privately, accessing Medicare-rebated sessions via a GP Mental Health Care Plan, or referral to other services if that's more appropriate. Transition is handled straightforwardly.
Do you work with clients who've had bad experiences with therapy before?
Yes — and this is fairly common in complex referrals. A history of unhelpful or damaging therapy experiences is worth discussing openly at the start. It shapes how we approach the work.
What organisations can set up EAP?
Any size — from small businesses through to larger organisations. Programs are tailored to what actually makes sense for your workforce and budget.
