Our Therapists

Why Choose Hobart Therapy

We have the experience to help

At Hobart Therapy, we want to understand the complete you – that means understanding where you came from and where you want to go.  We will work with you to head in a direction that works best for you.

Therapy can seem daunting whether you have undertaken it before or are coming fresh to a new therapist.  One thing we are keen to do is be active in your process – being with you in therapy – so there won’t be long awkward silences where you don’t know what to say, we’ll help you bring everything you need to therapy to create the change you want.

We can work in EFT, EMDR, CBT, DBT-informed practice, ACT, and attachment-oriented approaches, with a deep interest in how early life experiences shape us. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive space where meaningful change can happen.

Meet Dr Nick Stubbs - Psychiatrist

Dr Nick Stubbs is a psychiatrist who brings a thoughtful, person-centred approach to mental health care. He works with adults, couples and groups, supporting people experiencing a broad range of mental health concerns, including complex presentations, trauma-related difficulties, life transitions and periods of significant distress.

Dr Stubbs believes that effective psychiatric care begins with a safe, respectful and trusting therapeutic relationship. His approach is grounded in careful assessment, accurate diagnosis and evidence-based treatment, while maintaining a strong focus on the individual’s own experience, values, goals and hopes for the future. He understands that mental health difficulties are rarely simple or reducible to a diagnosis alone. Dr Stubbs takes time to consider the wider context of a person’s life, including their relationships, past experiences, work, identity and sense of meaning. Where medication may be helpful, this is considered carefully as part of a broader treatment plan rather than in isolation.

Alongside his medical and psychiatric training, Dr Stubbs has undertaken postgraduate study in Continental Philosophy. His interest in psychotherapy, philosophy and the ways people make sense of their experiences informs a reflective and collaborative style of practice. He is particularly interested in helping people better understand themselves, navigate periods of uncertainty or change, and identify practical pathways towards recovery and wellbeing. Dr Stubbs is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP). He provides psychiatric assessment, treatment and medication review, and works collaboratively with GPs, psychologists, psychotherapists and other health professionals when this supports coordinated care.

At Hobart Therapy, Dr Stubbs offers a calm and considered psychiatric service within a multidisciplinary setting, with the option for clients to access both psychiatry and psychotherapy in the one practice.

Meet Chris Black — Accredited Mental Health Social Worker

Chris is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in mental health. He started out in psychology and completed his psychology honours degree but found himself drawn to something more relational so he made the switch to social work, and hasn’t looked back.  Chris brings focus and commitment to every session whether it’s your first or your fiftieth and you’ll get a therapist who’s genuinely invested in your progress and present with you, not just another person in the room.

Chris works with people who want to understand themselves better, improve their relationships, and find practical ways to move through difficult periods.  Working with Chris will help you unlock a deeper understanding of yourself while providing genuinely useful ways to make change.

He draws on Attachment Theory, EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) approaches, and also has an interest in existential therapy particularly around questions of meaning and purpose when life gets hard.

Attachment is a particular focus for Chris. Understanding your attachment style can shift how you see yourself and how you show up in your relationships. That includes how you relate to yourself, not just others.  Also Chris has a strong interest in supporting parents who have a child experiencing mental health difficulties. Parenting  can be isolating and overwhelming, and Chris works with parents to make sense of what’s happening and figure out how to respond in useful ways.

One area where Chris has expertise is working with men, particularly around anger and how it can get in the way of connection and life. He brings a direct, no-nonsense approach that will not leave you sitting in silence and will actively work with you to create change.  If therapy has never felt like your thing, Chris gets that. He’ll meet you where you are — and if you’re ready for deeper emotional and relational work, he’s well placed to take you there.

Chris provides sessions face-to-face or via Whatsapp, Teams, or phone. You can reach him on 0449 734 441.

Additional Focus

I also have a particular interest in supporting parents of children with mental health challenges — helping them understand what their child might be experiencing and how best to manage the social and emotional difficulties that can arise.

If you’re someone who’s unsure about therapy (we’re looking at you men and young men), I take the time to explain how it works and how it can benefit you.

Give therapy a go, until you’ve tried it you can’t have any idea how much working with someone to improve the way you feel can help you and the people in your life
