Hobart Therapy provides experienced psychotherapy and psychiatry in Hobart, bringing practical therapeutic support and specialist medical care together in one practice.

Our clinicians are Chris Black AMHSW, psychotherapist and mental health clinician, and Dr Nick Stubbs, psychiatrist. We support adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm, anger, stress and other mental health concerns.

We understand that long delays can make it harder to seek help. Appointment wait times are often relatively short, subject to current availability, and we aim to provide a clear and responsive pathway into care.

Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in One Hobart Practice

Mental health care is rarely one-size-fits-all. Some people need focused psychotherapy to work through long-standing patterns, trauma, relationships or emotional distress. Others may benefit from psychiatric assessment, diagnostic clarification, medication review or specialist treatment planning.

At Hobart Therapy, Chris and Nick provide different but complementary forms of care. Where appropriate, this creates the option of coordinated psychiatric and psychotherapy support within the same practice, while maintaining clear professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Timely Access to Support

Wait times for psychotherapy and psychiatric appointments are often relatively short compared with typical service delays. Availability changes, but we will provide clear information about the next suitable appointment when you contact us.

Our Clinical Services

Hobart Therapy offers experienced care for people dealing with common and complex mental health concerns.

Burnout, Stress and Emotional Overwhelm

Experienced, Skilled and Practical Care

Good mental health care needs more than a label or a standard set of strategies. It requires careful listening, sound clinical judgement and a clear understanding of what may actually help.

Chris brings extensive experience in psychotherapy and mental health practice, offering direct and thoughtful therapy for people navigating emotional distress, trauma, anxiety, relationships and life transitions. Dr Nick Stubbs provides specialist psychiatric expertise, including assessment, diagnosis, medication review and treatment planning.

Our work is grounded in evidence-based practice, while remaining individualised. The focus is on understanding your circumstances properly and developing a realistic path forward.

Care at Hobart Therapy can help you:

  • Make better sense of anxiety, depression, trauma or emotional overwhelm
  • Clarify whether psychotherapy, psychiatric review or both may be useful
  • Understand recurring patterns in relationships, work and family life
  • Build practical strategies for emotional regulation and stress management
  • Review treatment options with an experienced psychiatrist where appropriate
  • Move beyond simply coping towards sustainable change

Care That Works Around Your Needs

Some clients attend for psychotherapy alone. Others are referred specifically for psychiatry. In some circumstances, it may be useful to access both services as part of an overall treatment plan.

You do not need to have everything figured out before making contact. We can discuss the reason you are seeking support and help identify whether psychotherapy, psychiatry or another pathway is likely to be the best fit.

Support Across Hobart and Tasmania

Hobart Therapy supports clients from across greater Hobart, including Battery Point, Sandy Bay, South Hobart, West Hobart, North Hobart, New Town, Moonah, Lenah Valley, Mount Stuart, Dynnyrne, Taroona, Kingston, Blackmans Bay, Bellerive, Rosny, Lindisfarne, Howrah, Glenorchy and surrounding areas.

Online psychotherapy appointments may also be available across Tasmania for people who prefer remote sessions or cannot attend in person. Please contact us to discuss current options.

Referrals, Medicare and Fees

You do not need a referral to enquire about psychotherapy. However, a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP are generally required if you wish to access eligible Medicare rebates for therapy.

Psychiatry appointments generally require a referral from a GP or another treating medical practitioner. Your GP can provide relevant background information and assist with a referral to Dr Stubbs.
