At Hobart Therapy, we want to understand the complete you – that means understanding where you came from and where you want to go.  We will work with you to head in a direction that works best for you.  

Therapy can seem daunting whether you have undertaken it before or are coming fresh to a new therapist.  One thing we are keen to do is be active in your process – being with you in therapy – so there won’t be long awkward silences where you don’t know what to say, we’ll help you bring everything you need to therapy to create the change you want. 

I am trained in EFT, EMDR, CBT, DBT-informed practice, ACT, and attachment-oriented approaches, with a deep interest in how early life experiences shape us. My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where meaningful change can happen.

Meet Chris Black — Accredited Mental Health Social Worker

Chris is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in mental health. He started out in psychology but found himself drawn to something more relational so he made the switch to social work, and hasn’t looked back.  Chris brings focus and commitment to every session whether it’s your first or your fiftieth and you’ll get a therapist who’s genuinely invested in your progress and present with you, not just another person in the room.

Chris works with people who want to understand themselves better, improve their relationships, and find practical ways to move through difficult periods.

He draws on attachment, EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) approaches, and shares Sasha’s interest in existential therapy particularly around questions of meaning and purpose when life gets hard.

Attachment is a particular focus for Chris. Understanding your attachment style can shift how you see yourself and how you show up in your relationships. That includes how you relate to yourself, not just others

Chris also has a strong interest in supporting parents who have a child experiencing mental health difficulties. That role can be isolating and overwhelming, and Chris works with parents to make sense of what’s happening and figure out how to respond.

One area where Chris has expertise in working with men particularly around anger and how it can get in the way of connection and life. He brings a direct, no-nonsense approach that will not leave you sitting in silence but will actively work with you to create change.  If therapy has never felt like your thing, Chris gets that. He’ll meet you where you are — and if you’re ready for deeper emotional and relational work, he’s well placed to take you there

Additional Focus

I have a particular interest in supporting parents of children with mental health challenges — helping them understand what their child might be experiencing and how best to manage the social and emotional difficulties that can arise.
