Trauma Therapy | PTSD & Complex Trauma Treatment | Hobart Therapy
We provide trauma therapy in the Greater Hobart region. Treatments are available for PTSD and cPTSD using EFT, EMDR and trauma-informed approaches.Â
Trauma does not always look like panic, flashbacks or crisis. Sometimes it looks like being constantly on edge, shutting down, feeling numb, overreacting to small things, avoiding conflict, struggling to trust people, or feeling like your body has never fully relaxed.
Hobart Therapy provides trauma therapy, counselling and practical psychological strategies for adults across Hobart and Tasmania. Support is available for PTSD, complex trauma, childhood trauma, relationship trauma, emotional overwhelm and the long-term effects of difficult life experiences.
Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy helps you understand how past experiences may still be affecting your nervous system, emotions, relationships and sense of self. The aim is not to force you to relive what happened. The aim is to help your mind and body feel safer, more settled and less controlled by the past.
Trauma is not just what happened.
It is also what your mind and body had to do to survive it. Therapy helps make sense of those patterns so they do not keep running your life.
Signs Trauma May Still Be Affecting You
Feeling On Edge
You feel tense, alert, easily startled, irritable or unable to fully switch off.
Emotional Numbness
You feel disconnected from yourself, other people, or emotions that used to feel more accessible.
Relationship Triggers
Conflict, closeness, rejection or criticism can feel overwhelming or unsafe.
Avoidance
You avoid memories, conversations, people, places or situations that bring up distress.
Anger or Shutdown
Trauma can show up as anger, defensiveness, withdrawal or going emotionally blank.
Shame and Self-Blame
You may know logically it was not your fault, but still feel responsible, damaged or not good enough.
PTSD, Complex Trauma and Childhood Trauma
Trauma can come from a single event, such as an accident, assault, sudden loss or frightening experience. It can also come from repeated exposure to stress, neglect, emotional harm, unsafe relationships, family violence, bullying or childhood experiences where you had to adapt to survive.
Complex trauma often affects more than memory. It can shape self-worth, relationships, trust, emotional regulation and the way you respond to pressure. Therapy needs to work with the whole pattern, not just the event.
How Trauma Therapy Can Help
- Reduce trauma symptoms such as anxiety, panic, nightmares, flashbacks or emotional overwhelm
- Understand triggers and why certain reactions feel automatic
- Build emotional regulation and grounding skills
- Process traumatic memories safely and at your pace
- Improve relationships affected by trauma, mistrust or emotional shutdown
- Work with shame, self-blame and the feeling of being permanently changed by what happened
- Reconnect with confidence, choice and a stronger sense of self
You stay in control.
Good trauma therapy should not overwhelm you. It should help you build safety, understand your responses and move at a pace that feels manageable. You can also read more about what to expect in your first therapy session.

Book an AppointmentFrequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy
Will trauma therapy make me relive what happened?
No. Trauma therapy should be paced carefully. The first step is usually safety, stabilisation and understanding your responses. Processing trauma does not mean forcing you to retell everything in detail.
Can therapy help with childhood trauma?
Yes. Childhood trauma can continue to affect relationships, emotions, self-worth and trust in adulthood. Therapy can help you understand those patterns and develop healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.
Is EMDR available?
Yes. EMDR therapy may be used where appropriate as part of trauma therapy. It can be particularly helpful for traumatic memories, PTSD symptoms and experiences that still feel emotionally charged.
Do you offer online trauma therapy?
Yes. Online therapy is available across Tasmania for people who prefer remote sessions or live outside central Hobart.
What does trauma therapy cost?
Session costs and rebate information are outlined on the therapy costs and Medicare rebates page.
